This article contains minor spoilers for Y: The Last Man, 2002 Vertigo comic series.

Dutiful fans of Brian K. Vaughan’s Y: The Last Man were rewarded with a bit of good news this week with FX Network’s recent press release. Although it appeared to be perpetually “in development,” FanBros fam Michael Green (American Gods, Blade Runner 2049) will be showrunner for the Y: The Last Man television series alongside Aida Mashaka Croal. Croal was a writer on the first seasons of Jessica Jones and Luke Cage for Netflix, as well as TURN: Washington’s Spies for AMC. Aida’s experience with the latter show is of particular note considering that Y fan-favorite character Agent 355 has ties to the mysterious Culper Ring.

Y: The Last Man is the story of Yorick Brown, the titular last man on Earth. Yorick traverses the world, the only male in a world ruled by women, as a trip to visit his girlfriend in Australia becomes so much more. Society has completely collapsed after the death of all males, and varying factions seek to take advantage of the situation in a number of ways. Aided by the enigmatic Agent 355, a Capuchin monkey named Ampersand and a slew of simple parlor tricks, Yorick comes to terms with the idea of Gender, Equality, Class and Obedience while trying to save humanity at the same time. Y: The Last Man is a 60-issue series published in 2002 under DC Comics’ Vertigo line. The highly-acclaimed series by Brian K. Vaughan (Runaways, Saga) was among the first to win the Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story in 2009. Other notable winners were FanBros fam Marjorie Liu and Saladin Ahmed for Monstress and Black Bolt respectively.

Per Deadline Hollywood, in addition to being showrunners, Green and Croal will also executive produce the series. Also from the production staff is pilot director Melina Matsoukas. Matsoukas has directed episodes of HBO’s Insecure, Master of None for Netflix, in addition to Formation for Beyonce. Though Y: The Last Man had been rumored to have been in and out of production for years, some of us always knew that things were good to go. You can be certain to stay tuned to FanBros for more on this one as it breaks!
