The comic book industry has existed for almost a century, and in its time, it has grown to be a titanic space. Month after month, year after year, there is always a new comic popping up on the scene, and, it can be a bit daunting for those who are trying to get into comics as interest. Not only that because new comics appear constantly, sometimes a comic book can be overlooked for whatever reason.

That’s where this biweekly series comes in. I’ll be arriving every two weeks like your paycheck, guiding you through comics that you may have missed, but they’ll be perfect gateway comics to help you ease into this grand world of graphic narratives.

First up, we’ve got Catwoman: When in Rome by Jeph Loeb with art by Tim Sale. Now those two names may ring a bell to Batman fans because they were behind Batman: The Long Halloween, and they use their skills with mystery, action, and wit to give us a scintillating tale that follows Selina Kyle aka Catwoman.

Picture it; the infamous Catwoman ventures to the rustic Italian scenery with the Edward Nigma aka the Riddler in tow. While there, she is put on a path that involves murdered mafia bosses, mysterious dreams, and the Cheetah from Wonder Woman comics. I know. Go ahead and make all of the catfight jokes you want.

Overall, the story is well written with a tone that matches Catwoman’s playful and sharp character while the art has an the earthy color scheme and vintage style that hearken back to iconic Italian films from the 20th century.

When in Rome has a great sense of introspection that is helps with the audience seeing Catwoman in a different light. She’s never been neither the hero nor the villain. She’s simply been a survivalist that works alone. However, this story has Selina examining the very few connections she has and in an entertaining way.

If you’re a fan of DC or Batman comics, then I recommend putting this on your bookshelf. Be sure to ask your local comic book shop if they carry it or buy it online.

I'm a sci-fi kind of guy. A child of Marvel with a love for DC. A Black Wizard in the Making. (Not the D&D kind. The Lord of Rings or Harry Potter kind).
