The Scoop – July 8th, 2013
Hey Fan Bros (and ladies), because I love you guys so much, I trolled the internet and found you some awesome news and rumors and put them all together in one compact little post.
After the jump, some Borderlands 2, top comics of the month, Guardians of the Galaxy rumors and more.
Bleeding Cool put together a list of the Top 100 Comics for June 2013. What’s interesting is that despite how MEH DC’s New 52 has been, they still grabbed the top three spots with Superman Unchained #1, Batman/ Superman #1 and Batman #21 (Zero Year). Cool, but not exactly surprising, especially since Man of Steel dropped last month.
Despite this, Marvel pretty much walked away the winners, having nabbed 21 spots out of the top 30, with much more diverse titles like Age of Ultron, Superior Spider-Man, Avengers and All New X-Men. (I like to think Age of Ultron cracking the top five was thanks to our own DJ Benhameen.) Also cool? The Walking Dead is now a top 20 title.
Borderlands 2 was one of my absolute favorite games of the past year. If you haven’t played it, well…I don’t even know what to say. A beatboxing droid named Claptrap who calls you minion, psycho bandits who light themselves on fire, a 13 year old girl who tortures and blows up dudes during her tea party, and the mother of all bad guys, Handsome Jack, who offers to pay you if you jump off a cliff and kill yourself. THE. BEST.
Speaking of which, Halloween just got more fun now that toy manufacturer NECA announced they’ll be selling Handsome Jack masks (complete with clips) AND Psycho Bandit masks this September. Both are hand painted and should retail around $26.99 each. Well worth it, because they look DOPE.
We’ve mentioned Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy was getting a movie, which is now shooting in the UK. We’ve also speculated on some of the casting rumors but Den of Geek have pretty much confirmed some of the roles.
Although we can expect an official casting announcement at San Diego Comic-Con this month, here’s the scoop: Benicio del Toro will be playing The Collector, one of the oldest characters in Marvel’s universe who protects the universe in his own way. Doctor Who fans rejoice! Our Amy Pond, Karen Gillan, will be playing Nebula, the villain and space pirate, who claims to be Thanos’s granddaughter. And finally, Lee Pace (who is also in The Hobbit trilogy) will be playing Ronan The Accuser, one of the Kree, who has some superhuman powers and is not quite a villain or a hero.
Harry Potter fans, if you can’t make it to Leavesden to visit the Warner Bros. Studio where the movies were primarily filmed, then Google Maps has you covered. You can now navigate through the incredible Diagon Alley set from the comfort of your own home. It looks AMAZING. Time to finish this article so I can pop into Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes!
Finally, has John Hurt’s role on Doctor Who been confirmed? Maybe. (SPOILERS! MAYBE?)
Prince Charles, who apparently has been a fan of the show since he was 15 (see, even the ROYALS love The Doctor!), and his wife, the Duchess of Cornwall, visited the BBC studios to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who. UM ALSO, PRINCE CHARLES VOICED A DALEK. THE PRINCE OF WALES. VOICED. A. DALEK.
The Telegraph details some hilarious moments from the visit, including the Duchess not being able to open the Sonic Screwdriver, the royal couple starting up the TARDIS and being bombarded by Daleks and basically, Prince Charles turning into the ultimate fanboy.
Also according to the article, costume designer Howard Burden confirmed that John Hurt will be in the 50th anniversary episode this November. “There was a gap between Paul McGann playing the Doctor and Christopher Eccleston, when we didn’t see a regeneration, and John Hurt will fit into that gap. He is a past Doctor, not a future Doctor,” Burden said.
And there you have it.
