The Scoop – August 5, 2013
In this edition of The Scoop, the Twelfth Doctor has been revealed, BioShock takes it back to Rapture and Jamie Righetti visits the set of Transformers 4. More after the jump!
Oh good, they announced the new Doctor and surprise! it’s a white male. Veteran actor Peter Capaldi was revealed as the Twelfth Doctor yesterday in a special broadcast around the world. You may remember Capaldi from the Doctor-Donna episode “The Fires of Pompeii,” which also featured Karen Gillan in her pre-Amy Pond days. Great.
My beef? At SDCC Steven Moffat (and for what it’s worth, Matt Smith too) went on and on about how the Doctor could be a woman. Then, literally a minute before revealing the new Doctor, Moffat said that not only could the Doctor be a woman, but that it was high time that happened. And then? A white male was revealed.
Maybe I’m overreacting but I found this incredibly offensive and patronizing. Moffat pontificated about the benefits of a female Doctor knowing the entire time that he had cast a man. So why even say all that? Because they needed publicity? So you rode on the feelings of all the female Whovians out there to hype up a television show that quite frankly is so gigantic around the world that it probably doesn’t need to spend a dime on advertising. Cool.
I’m sure Capaldi is going to make a fantastic Doctor. He’s a brilliant actor and I’m sure he’s a lovely person. But FUCK THAT. In my opinion, the message Doctor Who sent to it’s female fans was simple: ladies, you could be the Doctor but you’re not so best settle for being a sidekick. I’m sick and tired of this shit. So no, I will not be watching Doctor Who when the Twelfth Doctor takes over. I can’t justify giving over my time or money to a franchise that doesn’t give a shit about who I am. If this means I’m not a real Whovian then that’s cool because you know what else I’m not? A white man.
Oh shit, Rapture is back!
This teaser video for BioShock Infinite: Burial at Sea shows Booker and Elizabeth in the underwater city on the eve of its fall from grace. I love this trailer and it seems like this DLC should capture the same magic that made BioShock Infinite so brilliant. According to the developers, the gameplay will be an original experience but still combine the best aspects of the original series and BioShock Infinite. I am intrigued.
BioShock Infinite: Burial at Sea — Episode 1 is included in the BioShock Infinite Season Pass. You can also purchase the individual episode for $15 each. No release date has been announced yet but we’ll keep you posted!
Hey girl, I’m Batman.
Rumor has it Zack Snyder is considering slightly older actors for the role of Batman in the upcoming Batman vs Superman movie and yes, Ryan Gosling is one of them. CO-SIGN. Other actors being considered that I could care less about? Josh Brolin, Joe Manganiello, Richard Armitage, Max Martini and Matthew Goode. You can read more about them here if you care. Apparently this Batman will be established and rugged and there will be no origin story or recounting of his rise. Okay. The movie should begin filming next year to be released in 2015 so we should have a casting announcement soon enough.
Hey, I’m in Detroit and guess what? They’re filming Transformers 4 here! So I took a picture and now I’m sharing it with you all because I love you. We couldn’t get too close to the set but basically they had some Chinese ads posted around the area, there was a train car flipped onto its side lying in the middle of the street and just underneath the tram (which is called the People Mover btw – I can’t even deal) we saw some smaller buildings befitting a Hong Kong neighborhood with some gigantic machine parts strewn about. Even though I’m a native New Yorker and see movies filmed all the time back home, something about this was really cool. Maybe it was seeing Detroit transformed (heh) and bustling for a change. Anyway, don’t believe the rumors, Detroit is awesome and still has so much to offer and I love visiting here. Hopefully even more movies will come into town soon!
Oh hey, it’s a teaser trailer for Sherlock Season 3! The trailer doesn’t reveal much except Sherlock isn’t dead (shocker) and Watson grows a wicked ‘stache. Carry on!
