Sorry folks…Ava DuVernay is NOT directing Black Panther
In sad news for many, this weekend at Essence Fest 2015 director Ava DuVernay told ESSENCE magazine that while she was thrilled to be considered, after some thought she decided not to sign on to direct Marvel’s Black Panther starring Chadwick Boseman in the title role. DuVernay noted:
“In the end, it comes down to story and perspective. And we just didn’t see eye to eye. Better for me to realize that now than cite creative differences later.”
While we are pleased at Ava’s honesty, her comments bring about even more questions–exactly what kind of direction is Marvel going in that would have Ava DuVernay turn them down? Is the script so far along that there’s no way any director could come in unless they are 100% on board? Does this mean Marvel is looking for someone more familiar with comics to step in?
And what about Marvel’s whole deal with setting up talks with people like Ava for their “diversity movies”–just because Ava isn’t signing on for Black Panther does that means she’s not doing a Marvel (or superhero) movie at all? Last month Marvel cinematic universe king Kevin Feige confirmed meeting with Ava–so is this a grand scheme of misdirection?
