Sailor Moon Returns
Sailor Moon and her Sailor Scout friends are returning in a big way. Viz Media has licensed everything. Meaning for the first time, the original unedited Sailor Moon series will be available – legally — for American fans. Hulu has a few episodes up right now, with more being made available on Mondays. Unlike the DIC dub from years ago, which was heavily edited an only part of the series, Viz is promising Sailor Moon in her full weird Japanese magical dancing glory — unedited! Even the movies will get posted eventually. This is all leading to the premier of the New Sailor Moon series scheduled to launch later this year, which is also part of Viz’s new licensing deal.
I’m not going to lie and pretend as if I was the biggest Sailor Moon fan back in the day, because I wasn’t. If I wanted melodrama, there was always Robotech. However, that does not mean I don’t understand the show’s importance. Not only did Sailor Moon create the whole Magical Girl genre of anime and manga, alongside Dragon Ball Z, it was part of the one two punch that hooked a new generation of American anime fans. More so, Viz’s deal demonstrates how versatile streaming services have become and gives hope other series with expired licenses could be resurrected in similar fashions also.
