Review – Minecraft:Story Mode – Episode 5 – Order Up!
Episode 5 marks the final chapter in the first Season of Minecraft: Story Mode by Telltale Games. The initial story arc essentially concluded in Episode 4 (which shipped in time for Christmas) and Episode 5 marks the beginning of a new adventure for the new Order of the Stone. Minecraft being an open world sandbox game, I thought it was a smart choice to create story tension by having a city where the government banned crafting. My kids immediately responded to that freedom being taken away “this city is beautiful but it sucks!” I’ll let them take over the recap.
The Episode opens with Jesse and her friends in the jungle looking for a temple and fighting monsters. Once they fight the monsters and solve the puzzle in the temple, the floor opens up into a hole where there are four chests. In one of the chests is enchanted flint and steel, which spawn monsters the first time it’s used. After leaving the temples you run into your old enemies, the Ocelots, who are now the Blazerods. After arguing with them, you go back home and you have to deal with Ivor’s house, which is pouring out lava (as usual). On the next quest Petra, Jesse, Lucas return to the temple with Ivor and find a portal that takes them to an island next to Sky City. They build a bridge to reach the city where they’re told they committed a crime – building. 😮 Aiden, the leader of the Blazerods, tells the leader of Sky City that Jesse’s gang are thieves and steal treasures for themselves. But then Aiden releases monsters all over Sky City. Your gang has to fight the Blazerods to save the city and show you’re the real heroes. The episode ends in hallway with all sorts of portals setting up the next episodes.
It’s taken us longer than I wanted to get this up as Episode 6 is was released on June 7th, but part of the deal in letting my kids play through this is that they’d save up for the game and contribute to the review. The brilliant part of the next Episode is that Telltale game recruited popular Minecraft YouTubers (like Dan TDM, Stampy Cat and CaptainSparklez) to be in the new episode. Collectively these people have millions of young followers and by bringing these people into their game they have free advertising to all these potential customers. Brilliant. We’ll be back with a review of that very soon.
