Minecraft Story Mode
Telltale Games have released the trailer for their latest project: Minecraft Story Mode. Featuring the voices of Patton Oswald, Corey Feldman, Martha Plimpton and (a returning gig for The Walking Dead’s Lee Everett) Dave Fennoy, this will be a 5 part series set in Mojang’s Minecraft world. For the dozen people in the world who don’t know, Minecraft is a open world, sandbox game that allows gamers to build just about anything he or she can imagine, much like a virtual Lego set. It’s educational as well, imagine my surprise when I heard my daughter throwing about geological terms and I asked her what obsidian was (it’s a volcanic glass) and her response was ‘it’s made when lava hits water.’ The ‘Survival Mode’ aspect of the game, where Creepers come out at night, seems like almost an afterthought. My kids love Minecraft, they love playing it, they love building things in it, and oddly, they love watching YouTube videos of other people playing it. If you type ‘Minecraft’ followed by ‘Notch’ or ‘Herobrine’ you can see the millions of views these videos have and get an idea of how popular this game and these user made videos are. It also gives you an indication of how smart a business decision this was for Telltale.
I don’t like Minecraft. I don’t really like the building aspects of any the games that my kids like (i.e. – Disney Infinity and Little Big Planet). As a writer, I’m interested in how stories can be told in video games and I like being pulled into a story while I’m playing (which is why I don’t play games online, either). And telling engaging stories is where Telltale Games excels. I’m actually excited to play this with my kids, I watched them play Telltale’s Jurassic Park game and watching their jaws drop at the end of a cliffhanger episode took me back to being a kid. And if Telltale is looking for a young gamer to review their product, I know just the 8-year-old.
