Minecraft Story Mode – Episode 4 – Review
Although this season of Minecraft: Story Mode is supposed to be 5 episodes, the current storyline involving the Wither Storm is wrapped up in this episode and I assume episode 5 will set up the next season. There were some great storytelling moments in this episode, touches that elevated the series as a whole, like the revelation of the true nature of The Order of the Stone. In movies, they never kill the dog, but what about pet pig in a video game? I’ll let my 9-year-old Minecraft expert take over:
At the end of episode 3, Gabriel saved Jesse from the command block but he couldn’t remember anything.
Axel tried to find us when the Wither Storm regenerated into three separate Wither Storms. He found us and we ran and saw the Endermen taking blocks out from the Wither Storm. We hid in a cave and outside Soren and Ivor were talking and we learned that the Wither Storm was tracking the order of The Stone. We split into two groups and I went with Soren, Olivia, Gabriel and Ruben to find Ivor’s cottage in search of the Enchanting book. After going through a maze we found a broken Redstone machine that we fixed and used it to travel over a giant hole to get to Ivor’s cottage.
Inside Ivor’s cottage we found out that The Order of the Stone are fakes and the defeated the Enderdragon by using the Command Block. They weren’t mighty heroes at all. We found the Enchanting book and I enchanted a diamond sword and got new armour to fight the Wither Storm. From there we went to find the Wither Storm and we made Endermen angry so they would attack the Wither Storm when they got sucked up. Then we made a machine that could shoot Jesse into the Wither Storm, but Ruben, her pet pig, surprisingly followed her.
Inside the Wither Storm is dark and surrounded by obsidian and people that had been turned into obsidian with purple coloured eyes. It was sooooooooooooooooo CREEPY in there! Jesse finally finds the command block and tries to destroy but her sword falls just as the command block is about to break. Ruben throws the sword to Jesse and she breaks the command block. Ruben falls down a pit and then Jesse falls after. Jesse wakes up in water and the Wither Storm is dead. Petra’s wither sickness is cured, the people are back to normal but they found Ruben looking pale and hurt badly. He didn’t land in the water. What happens next is very sad. (I can’t tell u)
Ellegard finds a special Nether Star that got dropped from the Wither Storm and gave it to Jesse to put on the beacons and they light up. Gabriel tells the people the Order of The Stone were FRAUDS and Jesse and her friends become the new heroes!
All in all this series (so far, there’s still one episode to go, even though things feel wrapped up here), was a lot of fun for younger gamers. They brought enough Minecraft elements into the game that seemed to satisfy my kids and confuse me (ie: when presented with a crafting table, my daughter instantly knew how to craft a diamond sword without any in-game instruction). I love that Telltale finally brought something out for younger players and I also love how they gave the option to customize the gender and skin colour of the protagonist. I’m not sure if I would be playing this if I didn’t have kids, but it was a lot of fun watching my kids play through it.
