Marvel Creates Run The Jewels Variant Covers
All Fanbros who peeped our conversation with Marvel’s current Editor-In-Chief, Axel Alonso, know Run The Jewels 2 is one of his favorite albums. That’s understandable, given how amazing Run The Jewels 2 is. More importantly, because of Alonso’s love, Deadpool #45 and Howard The Duck #2 will have special variant covers; two parts inspired by the Tag The Jewels campaign and a Little league Football game.
Speaking to Rolling Stones, Alonso says he got the idea after watching his son score a touchdown.
“”He caught a touchdown pass that won the game. And on the sidelines, he took off his glove and he pointed at it and his friends were going “Run them jewels fast,” From there Alonso quickly made the connection and wanted Marvel to join in on the Tag The Jewels fun. “If you’ve got this movement around the world from Bangladesh to Taiwan, people are doing their interpretations of this logo, and I got these roughnecks doing it on the sideline of a football game. . .Maybe Marvel could weight in on this and have some fun.”
The covers from artists Skottie Young and Mahmud Asrar are indeed fun; capturing the spirit of both the now iconic Run The Jewels logo and the Marvel characters doing the homage. Mike and El-P were both pleasantly surprise by the results, having little belief the covers would happen.
“We just got told it was happening and we were like, ‘You can’t be serious, that’s not possible, how is that even possible?’ Then they showed us the covers. And it’s fucking crazy.” EL-P tells RS. Mike, for his part, had a little warning, “I knew it was happening potentially, but when it came all the way through, I was dancing around the room in my Polo underwear.”
The Variants will be hitting stores in a few weeks. Until then, continue to to bump Run The Jewels 2 at high volumes during all hours of the day.
