EA Shuts Down Loot Boxes In Battlefront 2 (Temporarily)
With the recent release of Star Wars Battlefront 2, players got firsthand experience with the game’s loot box system. In short, they were not at all happy. Players stormed forums and blogs to air their grievances about the game’s manipulative economy, with some posts getting responses from EA (not most of the important ones of course). In an AMA about the game, many users questioned the implementation of loot boxes and wanted to suggest better and more rewarding ways for players to unlock characters and abilities. Users had even calculated that it would take a player about 40 hours of gameplay to unlock certain characters like Darth Vader or Luke Skywalker. One post in particular got a very notable response that has since become Reddit’s most downvoted comment in the site’s history by far with over 600 thousand.
User MBMMaverick asked: “Seriously? I paid $80 to have Vader locked?”
EA then responded: “The intent is to provide players with a sense of pride and accomplishment for unlocking different heroes.
As for cost, we selected initial values based upon data from the Open Beta and other adjustments made to milestone rewards before launch. Among other things, we’re looking at average per-player credit earn rates on a daily basis, and we’ll be making constant adjustments to ensure that players have challenges that are compelling, rewarding, and of course attainable via gameplay.
We appreciate the candid feedback, and the passion the community has put forth around the current topics here on Reddit, our forums and across numerous social media outlets.
Our team will continue to make changes and monitor community feedback and update everyone as soon and as often as we can.”
This response was absolutely rained upon with downvotes, quickly surpassing the previous most-downvotes record holder within the first day. I can definitely see why, their response makes it sound like a 40-hour grind to unlock one character isn’t ridiculous. Quickly after this, EA decided to shut down the microtransactions in Battlefront 2.
It’s a half step forward after 20 steps backwards. Sadly, the microtransactions will still be in the game, but for now, the game has none. Exactly how it should be. EA have also made the characters 75% cheaper, meaning much less grind or pressure to buy the loot boxes that shouldn’t be there.
Not only did we, the people, push this garbage, but apparently Disney isn’t too happy with all that’s going on with Battlefront 2 right now either, seeing as its their property who’s name is being tarnished. Can EA save themselves from the wrath of their players and their shareholders? Only time will tell, and this story is snowballing pretty quickly.
Naughty Dog Celebrates 10 Years Of Uncharted
November 19th marked the 10 year anniversary of one of PlayStation’s biggest hits, the Uncharted series. This series came in and blew everyone away with its production value, its cinematography, and its engaging story throughout all 4 main games. To celebrate, Naughty Dog released a montage of some of the series’ best moments which you can see here. If you’ve been sticking with the series since the first one, it may just bring a tear to your eye knowing that such a fantastic adventure is over.
StarCraft 2 Goes Free-To-Play (But Not Without Shading EA)
StarCraft 2 has just gone free-to-play and their promo campaign is taking a couple shots. One of these shots is apparently aimed at Battlefront 2‘s play to win microtransactions and unbearable grind to unlock heroes.
