Gaming News Roundup – Feb 5

    Red Dead Redemption 2 Delayed

I think a lot of people were expecting this. The highly-anticipated next Rockstar game, Red Dead Redemption 2, has been pushed back into this Fall. Some were hopeful for it to release this Spring, which would have been a fantastic way to start the year, but sadly that won’t be the case. This shouldn’t be too big of a surprise though, Rockstar always delays their games, and they’re always worth the wait.

To announce the delay, Rockstar gave a statement:
“We apologize to everyone disappointed by this delay. While we had hoped to have the game out sooner, we require a little extra time for polish. We sincerely thank you for your patience and hope that when you get to play the game, you will agree the wait will have been worth it. In the meantime, please check out these screenshots from the game. We look forward to sharing a lot more information with you in the coming weeks.”

They also provided some pretty awesome screenshots that you can see here.

So we’ll be seeing it on October 26th this year. This should be the last delay for the game, so be ready this Fall.

Switch’s Online Service Will Become A Paid Subscription Soon

The online service for the Switch was a big selling point for the console over Xbox and PlayStation. Now that the Switch is a huge success, I suppose it is time for Nintendo to collect their bag from all us freeloaders. The pricing for the service is very doable though, at $3.99 for one month, $7.99 for three months, or $19.99 for a year, it’s easily the most affordable console to play online. The subscription also comes with free games that change each month, similar to the Xbox’s Game With Gold or Sony’s whatever it’s called. The difference between Nintendo’s monthly games and its competitors’ is that Nintendo’s free games are only free for the month they’re offered, meaning you’ll have to pay to play them after the month is over, even if you have it downloaded.

The Switch has a solid online system and its stability is why it’s worth it to subscribe to it. They plan to start charging in September this year.

A Mario Movie Is In The Works

Nintendo has recently confirmed that they’re working on a new movie starring gaming’s most iconic character, Mario. What’s notable is that the studio that they went to is Illumination, the same animation studio behind Despicable Me and Minions (ew). It’ll be co-produced by Shigeru Miyamoto though, so at least we know that it’s in the hands of someone who cares about the property.

    Microtransactions Returning To Battlefront 2

After making a statement about how Star Wars Battlefront 2 didn’t hit their expected sales figures, EA announced that their infamous microtransactions will be coming back into the game. It’s quite surprising that they think it’ll be fine this time around after the last attempt made national news, but they’ve supposedly revamped the system to be more fair to the player. We’ll see about that, but it does seem that the damage to the game’s reputation has been done.

    Gigantic Shutting Down

Another multiplayer game is shutting down soon. Hero shooter and MOBA hybrid, Gigantic, will be officially coming to an end in July. While a great game, it seems that its community just wasn’t big enough to keep the game running.

“Discontinuing Gigantic was not an easy decision. The game is a unique and exciting experience that captured many hearts and minds. Unfortunately, it did not resonate with as many players as we’d hoped,” Perfect World wrote.

It’s a shame to see a game that was still so new come to an end so soon. The game’s developing studio, Motiga, closed in November 2017, so it couldn’t have gone on much longer after that.

Night In The Woods Now On The Switch

Another great port is now available on the Switch! Night In The Woods is a fantastic, story-driven indie that has garnered a great fanbase around it. If you haven’t played it before, check this trailer out and see if you’re missing out on this great experience. Do some crimes on the go!

That’s the news for this week! Have well wishes for the Super Mario movie? Saddened by Gigantic shutting down? Let us know below!
