Ava DuVernay Signs On to Direct New Gods Movie for DC Entertainment!
Just a week after A Wrinkle in Time debuted with a 33 million dollar opening weekend, director Ava DuVernay has just signed on with DC Entertainment to direct a New Gods movie! The director of Selma, and 13th, was the first Woman of Color to helm a movie with a budget of 100 million dollars with Wrinkle. New Gods would make her the second woman director to take on a DC movie. Ava has been very active on Twitter following the announcement, and even mentioned the possibility of seeing Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins “around the block.”
The New Gods were a group of characters created in the 1970s for DC, by legendary comics creator Jack Kirby. As members of the warring citizens of planets New Genesis and Apokolips, the characters inhabited their own series of titles and resided within Jack Kirby’s “Fourth World” comics. Popular New Gods characters include Metron, Orion, Mister Miracle, and one of Ava’s personal favorite members, Big Barda. Another New Gods heavy-hitter is Darkseid, ruler of Apokolips and over-arching villain of DC’s cinematic offerings. We’ve already seen one of the New Gods onscreen in Justice League through its villain Steppenwolf.
Ava DuVernay has the unique opportunity to act as a retroactive architect of the current DC universe seeing as how New Gods’ characters play into DC Comics pre-history. Given the visual flair with which A Wrinkle in Time was filmed, Ava DuVernay may be the sort of visionary director DC Entertainment needs to bring its next slew of movies to the silver screen in a positive light. More news on this one as it develops!
